Position: Para Educator
Hours per day: Monday - Thursday: 6.5 hours/day Friday: 5 hours

Position Description: Classified
Primary Responsibilities:
The Para Educator assists the classroom teacher in all areas of academic and social skills instruction. The Para Educator may also provide small group or one on one instruction to students, and assist with lunch, playground and transportation duties. The Para Educator is a positive role model for students and is professional in all interactions with students, parents, and other team members. The Para Educator is professional and dedicated to helping students improve their academic, social and behavioral skills. The Para Educator works with students with IEPs and struggles in traditional educational settings with significant emotional/behavioral challenges. The Para Educator works with students by implementing strategies and interventions designed to decrease challenging behaviors and promote new skills.
Essential Functions:
1. Assists the teacher in preparing classroom materials and equipment
2. Assists in the daily and weekly planning for students.
3. Provides small group and/or one-on-one instruction.
4. Assists with the implementation of the student's Behavior Intervention Plan/IEP.
5. Facilitates appropriate peer interactions and social skills.
6. Assists students in a time of emotional withdrawal and/or outbursts.
7. Accompanies students during times of transition to other school areas/activities/to and from buses/to a safe quiet environment, etc.
8. Takes data on student academic and social/emotional progress.
9. Maintains confidentiality.
10. Remain flexible, adjusting to changes in routines and schedules.
11. Consider and accept new ideas and suggestions.
12. Attends team meetings.
13. Communicates effectively with other team members.
14. Participates in staff development.
15. Assists with physical restraint of the student in times of harm or safety to students or others.
16. Assists in the implementation of a Positive Behavior Intervention Plan.
Other Job Functions:
1. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:
Required Education and Experience
1. High school graduate.
2. A minimum of three years of working in a classroom as a Para Educator.
Preferred Education and Experience
1. B.A. in education
2. Experience working with students with significant behavior/emotional needs.
Required Skills, Knowledge and or Abilities
1. Knowledge of child development and behavior management techniques.
2. Ability to implement strategies taught during professional development sessions.
3. Dependability
4. Punctuality
5. Physically capable of performing de-escalation/restraint techniques
6. Ability to take and analyze data or the ability to learn.
Physical Demands
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following conditions:
- Significant: (i.e. sitting, talking, hearing, walking, vision, color vision, peripheral/depth perception, ability to adjust focus, grasping, handling paperwork, repetitive motion, use of a personal computer, looking at a computer monitor, lifting up to 10 pounds)
- Frequent: (i.e. standing, bending, carrying; use of phone; use of copy machine)
- Occasional: (i.e. driving, lifting over 10 pounds up to 45 pounds, reaching above the shoulder, use of fax machine)
- Significant - Occupation requires this activity more than 66% of the time (5.5+ hours/day)
- Frequent - Occupation requires this activity from 33% to 66% of time (2.5 to 5.5+ hours/day)
- Occasional - Occupation requires this activity up to 33% of the time (0 to 2.5+ hours/day)
