Position Purpose |
Independently perform a variety of skilled work in trades such as carpentry, electrical, and plumbing in the maintenance, repair, remodeling, and construction of Residential and Dining Services (RAD) buildings, grounds, facilities, and equipment. Serve as the primary lead for the area in maintaining and troubleshooting the kitchen equipment within RAD Facilities and campus dining facilities. Lead the work of entry-level student staff performing trades work for RAD Facilities, including assigning, checking, and inspecting work projects, training, evaluating, and educating in the philosophy and goals of RAD Facilities.

Essential Functions |
Maintenance and Repair Work • Perform maintenance, operation, and repair of electrical, mechanical, and structural systems of buildings, grounds, and utility distribution by performing duties related to skilled electrical, plumbing, sheetrock, painting, carpentry (framing and finish trim work), flooring, roofing, cabinetry, mechanical tasks, refrigeration maintenance, etc.; lead an assigned group of student employees performing this work. • Troubleshoot and repair or adjust systems not providing correct environmental control or other necessary support to building occupants. • Perform preventative and routine maintenance, in accordance with the RAD work orders, to building controls and related kitchen equipment. • Maintain the mechanical rooms in the RAD area according to college standards. • Assist in the fabrication of equipment and material constructed in trades shops in accordance with project requirements. • Safely operate and maintain hand and power tools such as drills, wood chisels, metal grinders, etc.; operate drill press, grinders, and other power and hand tools. • Inspect assigned areas to determine that work has been done according to RAD Facilities standards. • Maintain a safe and efficient work place. • Insure compliance with all technical legal and safety requirements. • Research and order required parts and supplies. • Maintain a running inventory of supplies and materials. • Keep accurate records of time and material expended. • Develop preliminary designs and cost estimates of proposed retrofit projects, including mechanical, electrical, or architectural. • Serve on the standby schedule and provide support to staff and to students for housing that includes evenings, weekends, and holidays. • Be available and respond to calls while at work by carrying the provided radio and cell phone.
Sustainability/Energy Conservation Projects • Implement energy conservation retrofits and other sustainability efforts relating to control strategies, area and hydraulic balancing and temperature ventilation levels; lead students in sustainability projects in housing. • Develop plan for conservation strategies and meet with RAD staff to plan and implement these initiatives.
Other Duties • Attend meetings and training courses as assigned. • Perform other duties as required.

• Skill in and ability to lead the work of students, including assign, instruct, and check the work and provide mentorship in a variety of different trades. • Knowledge, skill, and ability to perform skilled electrical, plumbing, HVAC, sheetrock, kitchen equipment repair, painting, carpentry (framing and finish trim work), flooring, roofing, cabinetry, and mechanical tasks. • Skill and ability to safely operate and maintain tools and equipment commonly used for carpentry, plumbing, painting, electrical, and mechanical tasks. • Skill in providing hands on training in a wide variety of trades, including associated tools, equipment, and safety precautions. • Strong planning, organizing, and scheduling skills and abilities. • Ability to work independently and demonstrate good decisions making skills when necessary. • Ability to communicate the philosophy and goals of Housing Facilities. • Ability to work under the stress of demanding timelines with the ability to relate in a professional manner to a diverse group of staff members, residents, conferees, and guests. • Ability to perform physically demanding labor. • Skill and ability in following and enforcing safety standards and practices. • Ability to respond to urgent and/or emergency situations; understanding of the importance of the safety and security of campus residents. • Knowledge of purchasing and bidding processes. • Ability to use computers to enter work orders, create and modify spreadsheets, conduct internet research, purchase supplies and equipment, email, and create word processing documents.

• Four years of general work experience in building and equipment maintenance, construction, or repair work or completion of a recognized apprenticeship in a skilled trade. • Experience leading the work of others.

Conditions of Employment |
• Must provide proof of identity and employment eligibility within three days of beginning work. • This position is part of a bargaining unit and covered by a collective bargaining agreement. • Prior to a new hire, a background check including criminal record history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant’s suitability and competence to perform in the position. • Must be able to move 20 pounds. • Must be available to work a standby schedule which may include nights, weekends, and holidays and be able to respond to after-hours calls within 30 minutes after having received them. • Must work overtime during certain times of the year such as June Cleanup (one week in June), Check In/Check Out (at the beginning and end of each quarter), and the summer conference season (typically from mid-June to beginning of September). • Must possess a valid Washington State Driver’s License.
